CQL Engineering and Project Mgt Division has been awarded a contract by the Hamlet of Sachs Harbour, NWT for engineering services for the foundation assessment of the hamlet’s 3-Bay Garage/Firehall.
The scope of work includes:
A) Structural Assessment
- Travel to Sachs Harbour to inspect the foundation and structure.
- Provide a brief report outlining the findings of the inspection, options to repair and prevent further damage to the structure.
- Recommend which option to pursue.
- Provide a budgeting-level estimate of the cost of the recommended option.
- The investigation is to focus on the foundation; however, other issues discovered in the course of the work and relating to the safety and continued usability of the building shall also be identified in the report
B) Geotechnical Assessment
- Provide a desktop geotechnical study to assist in determining the cause of the foundation problem.
On January 21 and 22, 2015, CQL inspectors Marta Paulino, Project Manager and Chengbo YU, E.I.T. visited and conduct an inspection on the Fire hall. Prior to the inspection, was conducted an information interview with Mr. Stephen Wylie, SAO of the Hamlet. Also, during the inspection, we talked with the firehall employees to gather more information about the building.
Due the inexistent drawings of the building, initially a floor plan and elevation plan were sketched. The interior inspections consisted in the following:
- Measurement of the level of the floor, in order to determine how is deep the settlement occurred.
- Measurement of the wall tilt, by using plumb line, in order to determine whether the resisting movement of the wall is greater than overturning movement of soil or water.
- Identification of existing cracks on the walls and between the walls and floor. The crack analysis is helpfull to determine the time of damage occurrence, type of damage, and the reason why damage occurred.
A final report will be submitted with our analysis, assessment, and recommended remediation method, with a cost A estimation for the recommend remediation method. This report will also include a desktop geotechnical study.
