Exterior-Overview1

The Hamlet of Aklavik contracted Canadian Quest Logistics (CQL) Inc to perform a structural assessment of the Aklavik Recreation Complex. The main reason for requesting the structural assessment of the building was due to the building experiencing differential settlement. Roger Anderson, P.Eng and Laird Ferguson, EIT of CQL performed a field inspection on July 4, 2014 (See photos below). This included developing basic foundation and floor plans, identifying all areas of concern, interviewing local users, and gathering pile samples. The final report will be delivered outlining our assessment, along with our recommendations.

From October 20, 2014 to October 27, 2014, Marta Paulino, Project Manager, oversaw the pile remediation work on perimeter piles of the southern and western walls of the community hall section of the Aklavik recreation center.

On November 4, 2014, Roger Anderson, P.Eng and Marta Paulino, Project Manager, observed the building leveling and witnessed the inner ply wall segment removal, making in-field recommendations to the Hamlet’s SAO regarding its repair.

Wood blocking system installation was implemented as the pile remediation method. The executive procedure is as following:

  • Cut and remove the perimeter skirting prior to install the wood blocking system
  • Excavate at least 200mm below existing ground level and always below the existent insulation
  • Cover the excavated area with geo-technical fabric or similar impermeable material
  • Fill the area with the compacted gravel base
  • Place a blocking foundation pad with three pressure treated layers
  • Place four layers of four pieces of timber
  • Place a set of adjustable welded timber under the existing building beam

Additionally, CQL recommended a biannual inspection and adjustment (if needed) to the foundation of the building to ensure freeze-thaw cycles are not affecting the stabilization of the building foundation.
