Bickish Road – Funding Proposal

The Hamlet of Aklavik is located along the Peel River and every year deals with high water during the spring break up. After the last flood in 2006, there was extensive damage to the Bickish Road, which is within the municipal boundaries. Repairs were done to only one portion of the road and residents are now concerned about three areas which are washing away, including the area that was repaired.

The Hamlet Council has great concerns, as this road has been identified in past community emergency planning to remove residents if the need arises. The community is seeking funding under the climate change provisions. We believe the erosion of the river bank has been exacerbated by elevated water levels, potentially attributable to increased run-off from melting ice and rising sea levels because of climate change.

Our funding proposal success will allow us to prevent a possible disaster from affecting the lives of our citizens (elders, children, all our people), should the community be seriously flooded in the spring melt and we are unable to evacuate the community using the only available road, namely Bickish Road. We appeal to you to save us from such a fate, by approving our proposal for funding.
