CQL offers integrated engineering and environmental services to provide innovative, and sustainable project solutions, including but not limited to Site Assessments, Site Remediations and the removal of hazardous materials from each project site.
In the north of Canada, wood piles support many of the buildings and many of these piles are either untreated or treated with wood preservative before installation. However, preservatives only slow the rate of decay, they do not eliminate it. Many buildings, particularily in the Mackenzie River Valley and Delta regions are supported on untreated piles in many cases installed in the 1970’s and earlier. These piles have been in service for more than 40 years and are nearing the end of their useful lives.
CQL can inspect your current pile foundation for early signs of deterioration and rot. We can determine the structural integrity of the foundation, therefore allowing us to determine the best and most economical remedial solution.
CQL offers Remedial solutions such as:
- Full Pile Replacement, Partial Pile Replacement, Boron Rod Installation.
- Engineering certificates valid for five years can be issued
- Design and installation of ground temperature sensing systems
- New Foundation design and installation
- Removal of hazardous materials
Foundation Design
CQL has experience in designing and installing both wood and steel pile foundations, consistent with Northern Engineering best practices aimed at satisfying the unique geological and permafrost condition of each location. Where thermosyphon systems may be required, we use a collaborative design team for design and installation of thermosyphon systems, to achieve the goal of maintaining the frozen conditions in the active layer.
Many of the older buildings in the north contain various materials that pose a health risk and must be disposed of properly, such as lead, asbestos, PCB and mercury. Demolishing or renovating a building containing these hazardous materials must be done by a professional with experience and knowledge in handling and disposing of the substances. Asbestos is commonly found in pipe & boiler insulation, decorative plaster, textured paint, drywall joint compound, tile & wallboard. Lead is commonly found in paint products produced up to the late 1970’s and mercury can be found in such products as thermostats and some fluorescent light tubes.
Hazardous Materials Abatement
CQL has specialized equipment, mobile facilities and trained professionals to allow us to properly and effectively remove hazardous materials from your site. We can remove and safely dispose of contaminated materials such as asbestos, lead, PCB, mould and Glycol. We can sample for potentially hazardous materials and arrange for testing.
CQL ensures that the removal of hazardous materials is completed in accordance within federal and territorial health and safety regulations and recommendations. We will also ensure that all materials are disposed of in accordance to all environmental regulations.
Demolition
CQL is equipped and ready to safely demolish all types of structures with control of dust and noise. We have the team and heavy equipment ready to safely and efficiently handle any size demolition project as well as being able to provide site remediation and preparation services allowing the client to have a site that is ready to be put back in service.
Site Remediation
In order to get your site back in service, we have a staff of highly trained and experienced personnel who will access hazardous conditions and risks, and recommend the best remediation solution such as chemical or thermal decomposition or biological decomposition. CQL can also handle VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) oil pollution.
